Hike Description - The Appalachian Mountains surrounding Boone offer endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Hiking is one of the best ways to become acquainted with the dense forests, steep mountains, and cascading rivers and creeks of the region. Our hikes offer something for everyone; from the budding photographer to those seeking a physical challenge. Whether you like going to the summit, hiking along river gorges, or looking at flora and fauna, hikes are one of the best ways to explore your mountain home.
This hike to Grandfather Mountain will take you to CallowayPeak; the roofof the Blue Ridge Chain of Mountains at an elevation of 5,964 ft by following the Boone Scout Trail. So named because of the distinct profile of an old man's face along its northern slopes, Grandfather Mountain is one of the most environmentally significant mountains in the world and is designated by the United Nationsas an International Biosphere. A gem in our own backyard, we avoid the crowds by venturing into Grandfathers remote backcountry following historic trails blazed by early Appalachian pioneers. This part of Grandfather Mountain is one of North Carolina's newest State Parks.- Family Weekend Hike information (pdf)
